Great Dane Club of America and Great Dane Club of America Charitable Trust $52,000 in Canine Health Research [Tuesday, April 7, 2009]

The Great Dane Club of America and Great Dane Club of America Charitable Trust have continued their dedication to funding canine health studies by their recent generous sponsorship of more than $50,000 to support CHF-funded research. The sponsorship, which supports several grants that will advance the health of the Great Dane, brings the organizations' total giving to CHF to over $75,000!

Canine health initiatives funded by the Club and Health Trust include studies in Lymphoma, Osteosarcoma, Cardiomyopathy, Cryptorchidism and Epilepsy. These studies are also sponsored by other clubs and breed foundations. By combining forces with these groups, the Great Dane Club of America and Great Dane Club of America Health Trust Fund have maximized their funding and support of research. While the cardiomyopathy study is Great Dane-specific, the other research projects will benefit all dogs, making the Great Dane sponsorship all the more valuable.

"The Canine Health Foundation's vision of providing a better future for dogs through funding research on the canine genome and to discover the causes and treatments of canine diseases has provided the Great Dane Club of America (GDCA) the opportunity to partner with them to fund canine research to benefit not only Great Danes but all dogs," said Linda Ridder, President of the Great Dane Club of America. "The GDCA thanks the CHF for this opportunity to participate in a brighter future for our canine companions through these health studies."

Added Paul Hardiman, Trustee of the Great Dane Club of America Charitable Trust (GDCACT), "The rewarding relationship with the CHF has been a privilege for me personally. The advances that have been made as a result of the GDCACT alliance and that of the GDCA with the CHF have been phenomenal. The GDCACT looks forward to being a small part of helping in the eradication of significant health problems not just to our breed but any knowledge gained or experienced will be of benefit to all."

"We are very appreciative of the Great Dane fanciers and their continuing support," states Dr. Terry Warren, CEO of the AKC Canine Health Foundation. "The Great Dane Club of America and the Great Dane Club of America Charitable Trust have played a significant role in advancing the health of all dogs, now and in the future."

The AKC Canine Health Foundation, founded in 1995 by the American Kennel Club, is the largest nonprofit worldwide to fund health research exclusively for canines. Our goal is to help dogs live longer, healthier lives. The AKC Canine Health Foundation is the leader in non-invasive genetic health research, stem cell research, and biotherapeutics benefiting both canines and humans. Through the generous financial support of the American Kennel Club and the Nestlé Purina PetCare Co., we’re proud to announce we have allocated more than $22 million in canine health research through more than 75 schools and research institutions worldwide.

The American Kennel Club, founded in 1884, is a not-for-profit organization which maintains the largest registry of purebred dogs in the world and oversees the sport of purebred dogs in the United States. The AKC is dedicated to upholding the integrity of its registry, promoting the sport of purebred dogs and breeding for type and function. Along with its nearly 5,000 licensed and member clubs and its affiliated organizations, the AKC advocates for the purebred dog as a family companion, advances canine health and well-being, works to protect the rights of all dog owners and promotes responsible dog ownership. More than 20,000 competitions for AKC-registered purebred dogs are held under AKC rules and regulations each year including conformation, agility, obedience, rally, tracking, herding, lure coursing, coonhound events, hunt tests, field and earthdog tests. Affiliate AKC organizations include the AKC Humane Fund, AKC Canine Health Foundation, AKC Companion Animal Recovery and the AKC Museum of the Dog.
