Hymmen/Daynakin Great Danes
Fawns and brindles
Obtained first Dane in 1974
What
inherited trait is the most difficult to
eliminate from a breeding program?
I would have
to say serious health problems, since often
it’s impossible to know exactly where they
came from in the first place and how to stay
away from them.
What is the most important attribute of a
stud dog?
Everything—because of course he’s going to
get blamed for any problem that comes up in
his puppies J.
Of course, every breeder wants to find a
stud dog who can be the complete package of
breed type, correct conformation, soundness,
health, temperament, and also have a
wonderful show career—and to be able to
consistently pass on those attributes to the
puppies he sires. But we all realize no such
perfect dog exists, so I think a stud dog
needs to have overall “balance”: Basic good
conformation and temperament along with
breed type and no glaring or serious faults
in either.
What is the most important attribute of a
brood bitch?
That’s a hard one, because there are so many
important attributes to look for in a brood
bitch.
If someone is new and hoping to start a show
and breeding program, then overall quality,
temperament and health would be the major
things to look for. Far too many new people
begin breeding with a mediocre or pet bitch
and attempt to “breed up”. Rarely can that
be accomplished. They would be so much
further ahead in purchasing a quality bitch
from an established breeder (who will also
act as a mentor) to begin with.
The experienced breeder will know what they
need in their own line(s) and place
priorities for brood bitch attributes based
on that. For example, I had a line that did
very well in the show ring. However, almost
every bitch ended up having C-sections and
then complications with mastitis. After
about five C-sections in a row I decided I
did NOT want to go through with that
anymore, and removed those bitches from my
breeding program. For me, in that case, a
bitch that can free-whelp was a priority.
Best dog you have EVER owned and/or bred?
Why?
The best dog I ever owned was a fawn male
purchased from the Penalva’s: BIS BISS Am.
Can. Intl. Ch. Penadane Daynakin Solitary
Man (“Troy”). I’d originally planned on
getting a bitch from that litter, but when I
saw the video of the puppies, he just stood
out.
In the show ring, Troy had a presence that
was (to me) breathtaking; always dignified,
proud and stable. He was a multiple
Specialty winner, Best in Show winner and
winner of the GDCA Top Twenty. Troy was
handled by Jane Chopson.
Outside of the ring, he was everything a
Dane temperament should be and a wonderful
breed ambassador. He was a great dog to live
with and to this day I miss him.
Best bitch you have EVER owned and/or bred?
Why?
The best bitch I bred (and co-owned with
Bruce and Edie Lind) was Am. Can. Ch.
Daynakin’s You’re So Vain (Vanna). Vanna
produced very nice puppies with great breed
type and overall health.
She produced 13 AKC Champions, numerous
Canadian Champions and a ranked agility dog.
Some of her kids have enjoyed Top Twenty
status, and she has many Champion
grand-kids. Almost all of my existing dogs
currently have Vanna behind them.
She was 11 years old at the time of her
death. I currently have a 9 year old
daughter of hers, Erin, who is in great
health.
Current breeders you most admire?
There are many breeders I admire. Instead of
listing them and taking the chance I forget
someone, I’d like to instead list the traits
that make me admire them.
· Those who consistently breed dogs that
exhibit breed type, good temperament and
soundness and are honest about their dogs
and breeding program.
· Those who do health testing and encourage
others to do the same.
· Those who take responsibility for the
puppies they produce.
· Those who are able to look at “the big
picture” and realize us “show folk” are the
minority and take an active stance in
education and rescue.
Will
you mentor new breeders? Yes or no? If so,
how should they contact you?
This year, time constraints simply do not
allow me enough free time to mentor new
breeders. However, I would be willing to do
so in 2009. |

Shaw
Davisdane Great Danes
I have shown and bred harlequins and mantles for 32 years.
What
inherited trait is the most difficult to
eliminate from a breeding program?
Skeletal defects are the hardest to correct.
Fronts, rears, croups. I once brought a
beautiful mantle bitch into my breeding
program who had 'almost' everything I
wanted. She was big, with a lot of bone,
beautiful front, outstanding head,
outstanding pedigree, but with a bad croup,
which she reproduced consistently. I was at
a point where I didn't want to 'throw out
the baby with the bath water', but it took
generations to get rid of that croup.
What is the
most important attribute of a stud dog?
The ability to be able to see his good
traits in his puppies, to be able to stamp
himself, and to produce healthy get with
good temperaments. It's nice when you can
look at a puppy and tell who his sire is -
that's consistency.
What is the most important attribute of a
brood bitch?
To produce better than herself and, again,
to consistently produce healthy pups. We
always have to remember that, especially in
my color family, the majority of the puppies
go into pet homes and become a beloved
member of someone's family. They need to be
healthy and of good temperament, or they
will be the cause of a great deal of
heartbreak. First and foremost, we must
remember that. It is a huge responsibility,
never taken lightly. A bitch (or stud dog)
in our breeding program needs to take and
pass the appropriate health testing. We owe
that to our puppy buyers.
Best dog you have EVER owned and/or bred?
Why?
I have two:
CH Davisdane's Double Exposure, CD - My
first homebred champion. I learned a great
deal about the breed and about showing both
from Kodak and from Judy Harrington, who
handled him. I gained confidence in my
breeding program. I learned that soundness
and movement had to be in the forefront. I
started out thinking that something I bred
couldn't possibly be a good as everyone
else's dogs and then I watched him win huge
AOAC classes - those days they would have
10-12 dogs in them. Judy taught me about
handling, professional behavior and good
sportsmanship, and of course, where to be at
all times outside the ring.
CH Amherst-Davisdane Roadrunner, CD - Willie
was a wonderful dog, bred by Sandy Rundle.
He was handsome, smart, sound of body and
mind, and just a great dog.
Best bitch you have EVER owned and/or bred?
Why?
I've had some wonderful girls, but I believe
that the best bitch I ever bred is in my
house right now, Davisdane's Lucky to be
Ducky. I feel that she is the culmination of
my 32 years of breeding and everything I've
worked towards. Her color isn't perfect, but
I could just look at her all day long. In
addition, she is gentle, sweet, an 'easy
keeper', smart, and an effortless mover. She
is just a beautiful package.
Current breeders you most admire?
Pat Ciampa, Ray Cataldi, Jose Ribo - They
continue to consistently produce outstanding
Great Danes with their stamp on them. That
is what makes a good breeder.
Will
you mentor new breeders? Yes or no? If so,
how should they contact you?
Yes, of course. My email is

Mary
Barnett Reed. Kennel name is Windy Hill. I bred my
first litter in 1995, and have owned, bred and finished fawns and
brindles, now I also have a Harlequin puppy show prospect. Currently
GDCA Rescue Chairperson.
What
inherited trait is the most difficult to
eliminate from a breeding program?
From my
experience, most difficult trait to eliminate is incorrect straight fronts.
What is the most important attribute of a
stud dog?
Ability to produce himself and preferably
better; also a great temperament, neither fearful nor aggressive.
What is the most important attribute of a
brood bitch?
Size and substance is necessary to produce
the same; also having a
wonderful temperament.
Best dog you have EVER owned and/or bred?
Why?
I can't narrow it down to one, so I will say
my two dogs BISS CH Windy Hill's Gold Plated, and CH Windy Hill's Kodak Moment.
Collectively they were/are the sires of numerous champions, BISS winners,
National Specialty winners, Futurity winners, the list goes on. Both were a joy
to live with, and produced their wonderful temperaments consistently.
Best bitch you have EVER owned and/or bred?
Why?
The mother of the 2 dogs above CH Windy
Hill's Astra v Jerdan. She was from my first litter, also the dam of 2 other CH.
Also had a very pleasant personanlity, and passed this on as well as her size,
substance and breed type. She lived to the wonderful age of 11 1/2 years.
Current breeders you most admire?
Current breeders I most admire are Pat
Ciampa and Fran Lass, because of their many years and extensive knowledge of the
breed, they consistently produce sound, healthy, beautiful Danes, correct in
both type and temperament.
Will
you mentor new breeders? Yes or no? If so,
how should they contact you?
Yes, I will mentor new breeders. Contact
